Shining Light on Homelessness and Hunger in Our Communities

Hidden Hunger: Exploring Food Insecurity in Suburban Areas

Despite the overall influence of some suburbs, there are still many economic gaps within these communities. Low-income families may struggle to afford nutritious food, leading to food insecurity.

The cost of living in suburban areas, including housing, can be high. Families may allocate a significant portion of their income to housing, leaving limited funds for food purchases. Suburban areas also have fewer support services for the homeless, such as counseling, job placement assistance, and healthcare, making it harder for them to find the causes of their housing instability. With limited resources and support systems, homeless individuals in suburban areas may find it more challenging to break the cycle and access the assistance needed for long-term stability.

An additional factor adding to the problem of homelessness and hunger is underemployment. Even for those who manage to find part-time or temporary work, underemployment is a common challenge. Jobs may not provide a living wage, making it difficult for individuals to escape homelessness or maintain stable housing.

Homelessness and hunger is not a subject that we should be taking lightly. Below there are many sources you could use to help as much as you can.
